artisan making hand knotted wool carpet in bhadohi

History of Bhadohi

The Carpet City of India

Bhadohi, often referred to as the “Carpet City of India,” is the undisputed capital of hand-knotted rugs weaving in South Asia. This district, located in the state of Uttar Pradesh, lies along the ancient cultural corridor between the spiritual cities of Varanasi and Prayagraj.

However, it is the artisans of Bhadohi, rather than its geography, who weave the city's true identity. The region produces approximately 75% of India’s total carpet exports, employing millions of rural artisans who sustain a 100% export-oriented industry.

The 16th Century: The Mughal Genesis

The art of carpet weaving in Bhadohi dates back to the 16th century, flourishing during the reign of the Mughal Emperor Akbar. According to legend, a caravan of Persian master weavers traveling along the historic Grand Trunk Road faced an attack and suffered injuries. The villagers of Madhosingh rescued and sheltered these master craftsmen, who then chose to settle in the region. In gratitude, they set up their looms and shared the intricate art of hand-knotting with the local people, planting the seeds for a dynasty of craftsmanship.

The Indo-Persian Fusion

The fusion of Persian craftsmanship and Indian resilience gave rise to a distinctive Indo-Persian weaving tradition. While the Persians brought the patterns and vertical looms, the local artisans infused the work with the subcontinent's vibrant palette and cultural motifs. As the decades passed, the skill of weaving, from tying knots to reading nakshas (master design plates), became hereditary, passed from father to son and from mother to daughter.

This deep-rooted tradition transformed Bhadohi into more than just a manufacturing center. It became a cultural ecosystem where craftsmanship shaped entire communities and livelihoods. Even today, many weaving families continue to practice techniques preserved through generations, keeping the authenticity of handmade rug artistry alive in an increasingly machine-driven world.

The Modern Era & Global Recognition

The industry saw a significant boost in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, evolving from a cottage industry to a global export powerhouse. In recognition of its unparalleled heritage, the handmade carpet of Bhadohi was awarded the prestigious Geographical Indication (GI) tag in September 2010. Today, the region is also home to the Indian Institute of Carpet Technology (IICT), ensuring that the science and art of textile engineering continue to evolve alongside tradition.

At Bhadohirug, we are proud preservers of this history. Our work is a tribute to the weavers of this land, craftsmen who turn wool, cotton, and silk into masterpieces that adorn floors across the globe.
